Here's the difference in one line: Denver weed bars, more formally called cannabis consumption lounges, are licensed hospitality spaces where adults 21+ can consume on site, while a dispensary is a licensed store where you buy cannabis to take home. In Denver, some lounges sell cannabis by the serving and others ask you to bring your own. Options Cannabis Company is a recreational dispensary in Wheat Ridge, so we're where you shop for home, for the weekend, or before a visit to a bring-your-own lounge.
Denver's cannabis lounges have been in the news a lot lately. Venues like Cirrus Social Club and Tetra Lounge give adults something Colorado's public use laws otherwise don't: a legal place to consume with friends outside of a private home. But the two models work very differently from a dispensary, and from each other.
What is a cannabis consumption lounge, and how is it licensed?
A cannabis consumption lounge is a business licensed for on-site consumption. Every cannabis lounge in Denver works under this kind of license. Colorado law bans using cannabis in public places, including bars, restaurants, and other businesses, so lounges operate under specific hospitality licenses. In Denver, those licenses are handled by the city.
How are Denver weed bars different from dispensaries?
It mostly comes down to where you consume and how you buy.
At a dispensary
At a dispensary, you buy sealed, packaged products to take with you, and you can't consume on site. Adults 21+ can buy up to 1 ounce of cannabis (or its equivalent) at a time. You also get the full menu: flower, concentrates, vapes, edibles, topicals, and prerolls in a range of sizes and price points. Then you take your products home and consume on private property where it's allowed.
At a lounge
At a lounge, you pay for access, a reservation, a membership, or menu items, depending on the venue, and you consume on site in a space built for it. Depending on the license, you either buy single servings there or bring your own. The focus is the social experience: seating, events, music, food, and non-alcoholic drinks.
Neither one replaces the other. Most people who visit lounges still shop at dispensaries for everything else.
How does Cirrus Social Club work?
Cirrus Social Club is on East Colfax Avenue in Denver. It opened in April 2025, and Westword's review described an upscale lounge where staff serve cannabis tableside from the club's own menu. Here's how Cirrus describes a visit on its own website.
Cannabis is served on site. The menu is built around single servings, like a bowl, a bag, or an edible. Because of its license type, guests can't bring their own cannabis or their own glassware.
No alcohol, and no membership required. The license doesn't allow alcohol sales, so the club serves zero-proof drinks instead. Cirrus is open to the public for adults 21 and older, membership is optional, and the club recommends reservations, especially on weekends.
So for a Cirrus night, you don't need to shop beforehand. You'll be ordering from their menu.
What happened to Tetra Lounge?
Tetra Lounge opened in 2018 at 3039 Walnut Street in Denver's RiNo neighborhood, and the Denver Post has called it one of Denver's pioneering cannabis lounges. It runs on a bring-your-own-cannabis model: the lounge doesn't sell cannabis, and guests bring products they've bought legally.
In July 2026, the Denver Post reported that Tetra would leave its RiNo space on August 10 at the end of its lease, with the owner planning a new location. A Tetra spokesperson told the Denver Post the new space would be an upgraded version of the original model. Tetra's own site says the lounge is relocating and plans to reopen in fall 2026. If you're hoping to visit, check Tetra's current status directly before making plans.
Should you shop at a dispensary before going to a lounge?
It depends on the lounge's license.
For bring-your-own lounges, yes. You'll need to buy legally from a licensed dispensary first and stay within Colorado's possession limits. For lounges that sell on site, like Cirrus, no. Outside cannabis typically isn't allowed, so leave your stash at home.
For a bring-your-own visit, here's how we'd prep at Options.
Check the venue's rules first. Some spaces allow certain consumption methods and not others. Then buy what you'll actually use. Prerolls and a few grams of flower are easy to carry and portion.
Keep products sealed while you travel. In Colorado, opened cannabis packaging in a vehicle's passenger area can lead to an open container charge. To save time, order from our online menu and pay at pickup the same day.

Why shop at a dispensary for most of your cannabis?
Lounges are a night out. A dispensary is where you stock up for the rest of the week. A few reasons Wheat Ridge, Arvada, and Lakewood shoppers come to Options.
We grow our own. Our flower comes from our own Front Range grow, and you can read about it on the Our Grow page. We also stock a wide selection of outside products, so browse the brands we carry alongside our in-house line.
Everyday value. Our current everyday deals include shake ounces at $40 out the door and popcorn ounces at $70 out the door. See what's on today on our daily deals page. And our budtenders know the menu well, so they can help you compare products and find the right fit.
What should first-time lounge visitors keep in mind?
If you've never consumed in a social setting, go slow. It's easy to lose track of how much you've had when you're chatting with friends, and edibles in particular can take up to four hours to reach full effect, according to Colorado's state guidance. Pace yourself, drink water, and give each serving time before having more.
It also helps to treat a lounge visit like any other night out. Check the venue's hours and reservation policy before you go, bring a valid 21+ ID, and know how you're paying. Respect house rules about where and how you can consume, and be considerate of the people around you. Know the plan before you go and the night's easier.
How do you get home safely after a cannabis lounge?
Plan your ride before you go. Colorado treats driving high as impaired driving, and the state warns that even 10 mg of THC can impair occasional consumers. Use a rideshare, take transit, or have a sober driver. If you're coming into Denver from Wheat Ridge, Arvada, or Lakewood, that's worth sorting out before the night starts, not after.
